Style/Period/Movement: Physical Description: In the lower left & right corners is woven Manufactured S. Kuder, Trexlertown Lehigh Co. PA,(Pennsylvania). Elisa A. Heinz 1852. The Jacquard Loom was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801. This mechanical loom was able to manufacture more complex patterns through the use of pasteboard cards with punched holes that determined the design of the weaving. This allowed complex textiles to be woven by men without extensive training or skill. The loom reduced time, labor and costs as well as allowed the same pattern to be reused. The punch cards were the precursor to the systems used by early computers. This coverlet has a floral central medallion motif with four tulip clusters in the corners. There is a floral scroll border on three sides. Looks as if a worn portion was cut off. This is evident since the corner pattern is not complete. It is hemmed with the body of the coverlet rolled over itself. The colors of this coverlet are mustard yellow, rose and dark blue in varying width stripes. The fringe is woven separately & hand attached to three sides. The condition of this coverlet is well worn. Some of the fringe is worn off completely. There are some holes in the top portion of the coverlet. Exhibition History: Rothman Gallery, F&M College, Lancaster, PA. Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001), an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades.
