The following project represents a year-long study of writing longer fiction. Having solely written short fiction until this point, I sought the challenge of a longer work for several reasons. First, I was eager to develop and sustain a voice—in this case, two voices—to an extent where I could really know my characters, their histories and motivations, and understand their actions. Second, I wanted to maintain realism, the goal of any good fiction, in my opinion, for a longer time than the short snippet of life one gets from a short story. Finally, I wanted to write a compelling story that would be of interest to my readers.
While I have some notions of where I hope this work will go, I have been pleasantly surprised to learn that my characters have greater control over the work and its direction than I would have thought. I wrote what felt instinctual to me, finding that no matter what I might want a character to do, if it didn’t feel real, the character couldn’t do it. I have left the story open, having learned that it, and I, will find its direction as I write. It is a work in progress, with many open doors through which it may advance.
I understand that this is a very busy time of year; therefore, if you find you are unable to read the whole work, please feel free to read only Chapters One and Two in order to get a picture of the work and the writing. Thank you so much for participating in this project with me. I do hope you enjoy my work, and I look forward to discussing it with you.||en
