Show FileMIME type:image/jpegFile Size:76.4 Kb
Classification: Building Furnishings, Bedding, Quilt. Materials and Techniques: Appliqued Cotton. Style/Period/Movement: Physical Description: Two individual quilt blocks that were quilted and individually bound. The pattern is an oak leaf, also known as Oakleaf and Reel or Lovernulls Knot and was sometimes made in celebration of a couplenulls marriage. These blocks, believed to have been made in the 1860s, are made of red and green calico fabrics on a cream or gold background. The quilting is only on the front of the blocks and follows the applique pattern. The backing is a green flowered print that is believed to be from the 20th century. It is possible that the blocks were once part of an older quilt as the quilting is only visible on the front and not the back of the blocks. Exhibition History: Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001), an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades. Robert L. Schaeffer, Jr. purchased quilt from Hatti Brunner (1890-1982), Antiques dealer from Reinholds, Pennsylvania in the 1960nulls.
