Floral Variation Quilt
Classification: Building Furnishings, Bedding, Quilt. Materials and Techniques: Appliqued Cotton. Style/Period/Movement: Physical Description: Composed of four large blocks. In the center of each panel is a large rust madder calico flower and radiating from it are twelve green, rust madder & yellow calico buds, on a white background. The border is white with a wide rust calico stripe. There is a green calico binding around the edge of the quilt. Quilting consists of feather and flower motifs around the bud shapes with geometric shapes quilted around the main flower. The border has two rows of undulating feathers quilted in the white protions and a chevron pattern quilted in the rust portion. The back of the quilt is white. The rust stripe is the same print on three sides, the forth side is the same print as the rust in the flower. Exhibition History: Winter, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, Rothman Gallery, Franklin & Marshall College. Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001) , an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades. Robert L. Schaeffer, Jr. purchased quilt from Hatti Brunner (1890-1982), Antiques dealer from Reinholds, Pennsylvania in the 1950nulls.
