Rose Wreath with a Swag
Classification: Building Furnishings, Bedding, Quilt. Materials and Techniques: Applique Cotton. Style/Period/Movement: Physical Description: 16 rose wreath blocks with sashing. The border consists of a swag and bow border within ia greco style-stepped border. All of the flowers and some of the bows are the same red calico fabric. The rest of the bows are another red calico fabric. The green vine and leaves in the wreath and the swag at the four corners are the same green fabric. The sashing and the rest of the swag and greco border are all the same yellow-green fabric. The backing fabric is white and is folded onto the front and hand hemmed to create the binding. Exhibition History: Rothman Gallery, Franklin & Marshall College, Winter 1992-1993, 1995, 1996, 1997. Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001) , an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades.
