Applique Oak Leaf Pattern

Style/Period/Movement: Physical Description: This quilt has a central medallion in an Oak Leaf pattern. The medallion has five brown print sashings that are pieced in a white background. The red oak leaves are in singles and clusters of five and two. Some of the clusters have a round padded base from which the leaves radiate. There is an inner border of the same brown printed fabric used in the sashing. The side borders have clusters of two green leaves. The top and bottom borders have clusters of five green leaves. At the top, in the upper left corner is a label appliqued on to the quilt. The label is cross stitched in blue and red cotton thread. There is a zig-zag border around the label, which reads "Martha Achy-1848". There is quilting around each applique and sashing. There is also delicate quilting in the nagative spaces. The quilt binding is made from the same green fabric as the leaves. Exhibition History: n/a Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001) , an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades. Robert L. Schaeffer, Jr. purchased quilt from Hatti Brunner (1890-1982), Antiques dealer from Reinholds, Pennsylvania in the 1950nulls.
