Cocknulls Comb Quilt

Materials and Techniques: Appliqued Cotton Style/Period/Movement: Pennsylvania German Folk Art Physical Description: Four large red and white print Cocknulls Combs. Tulip pot in the center. Background is yellow calico. Quilting echos pattern and background is quilted in a grid pattern. The backing fabric is a blue cotton floral pattern with stripes. Exhibition History:Exhibited in the Peoplenulls Place Quilt Museum, Intercourse, PA-November 10, 1995-January 31, 1996. Collection or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer (American 1918-2001) , an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades. The donor states that he purchased this quilt form Hattie Brunner (American1890-1982) in the 1960nulls. Hattie Brunner from Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was a folk art painter as well as one of the first antique dealers in Pennsylvania German Folk Art.
