Pastel Lone Star Quilt
Classification: Building Furnishings, Bedding, Quilt. Materials and Techniques: Cotton fabric, pieced and appliquéd. Physical Description. This quilt is made of cotton prints and solid pastel colors with a deep red accent color. There are also eight smaller stars. The background is a light blue calico. There is no border. The backing fabric is a striped print. The quilting follows the diamond shapes of the star pattern. The smaller stars have been pieced and appliquéd to the quilt top. Exhibition History: Rothman Gallery, Spring 1995. Collections or Donor: From the Robert L. Schaeffer Jr. Collection donated to the college in 1987. It is said that Schaeffer, an avid collector of American folk art, often crossed paths with the Duponts. The collection largely represents a narrow geographic region consisting of Pennsylvania German objects and was accumulated over four decades. Schaeffer’s grandfather served on F&M’s Board of Trustees. The donor states that he purchased this quilt form Hattie Brunner (American1890-1982) in the 1940nulls. Hattie Brunner from Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was a folk art painter as well as one of the first antique dealers in Pennsylvania German Folk Art.
