Red Carolina Lily Quilt

Style/Period/Movement: 19th century Physical Description: This quilt consists of blocks of Carolina Lilies with a sawtooth border around it. There are twenty blocks in total. There is a sawtooth inner border and a white outer border. The fabrics that make up this quilt are solid red with green, yellow and red calico. Most of the lilies and three sides of the inner sawtooth border are made of the solid red fabric. The remaining flowers and one side of the sawtooth border is in the red calico. The stems and leaves are all yellow calico and are machined appliquéd. The quilting in the lily blocks is in straight rows. The green sawtooth area has quilting with the pattern and there is also a feathered flower. The red and white inner sawtooth border looks as if it is machine sewn together but hand quilted. The outside border is quilted with an undulating feather and stars. The edging is three sided pink calico and one side red gingham and hand sewn. The donor states that he purchased this quilt from Hattie Brunner in the 1940s. There is a dealernulls mark on the back. AAIX/RIXX.
